Charleston in South Carolina has been named as the best city in the USA in the latest Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards this year.

This is actually the fourth year in a row that Charleston has made it into the list of top North American travel destinations, and is the second year that it has scooped the top spot.

This got us thinking about what it is that makes Charleston such a wonderful place to visit, given that it’s not often at the top of people’s lists when they visit the USA for the first time. Hopefully this will give you an idea of why it’s worth a visit, and maybe even inspire you to include it in your itinerary for your next trip.

If you’re unfamiliar with Charleston, you’re not alone. It’s something of a hidden gem in the US, nestled on the east coast in the state of South Carolina. It’s known for its beautiful architecture, friendly locals and laidback charm.

Charleston is also incredibly historic, being the first place that a shot was fired in the Civil War and also being home to an array of heritage sites. Fort Sumter was the location where this fateful conflict began and you can still visit it today to learn more about the fighting between the Confederates and Unionists.

The city is also home to a number of historical houses, such as Drayton Hall – the oldest unrestored plantation manor in the country – Aiken-Rhett House, and Middleton Place House Museum, where you can learn all about the Middleton family, a group of wealthy rice barons, and how they shaped the history of the USA.

However, Charleston is about much more than its heritage, with plenty on offer for active travellers to enjoy as well. Its river and coastal location mean it’s a great place to try a range of water sports, including stand up paddleboarding and kayaking. On dry land, meanwhile, you can go horseback riding, play a round of golf or explore the city by bike.
