An insiders guide to the best places to eat in Cape Town!

17/02/2016

Cape Town is buzzing with amazing restaurants, all benefiting from the delicious natural ingredients on their doorstep, so we have put together a list of some of the city’s very best eateries for you to enjoy, from fine dining experiences to waterfront restaurants and even the best fish and chips!

Top Chef, Luke Dale-Roberts’ restaurant, The Test Kitchen has won the award of Restaurant of the Year* for four years running with its edgy, fine dining.  In Cape Town’s Old Biscuit Mill, Woodstock, the menu is an eclectic mix of East meets West using the very best of the indigenous produce.

The Pot Luck Club

Also in Woodstock, on the top floor of the silo building is The Test Kitchen’s younger sibling, The Pot Luck Club .  With incredible views of the mountains, this very cool new hang out has a menu designed for sharing.  The selection of tapas-sized plates are divided into five taste sensations so you can enjoy each flavour on its own.

La Colombe, Constantia – Chef, Scot Kirton won Chef of the Year* and the restaurant took 2nd place (behind The Test Kitchen).  This legendary French influenced Cape restaurant has recently moved to Silvermist Organic Wine Estate on Constantia Nek and now perches on the side of the mountain.  Widely acclaimed as one of the best restaurants in the Cape, the menu is seasonally inspired with an experimental and playful twist.

Harbour HouseHarbour House, at Kalk Bay Harbour or at The Waterfront.  At either of the two locations you guaranteed incredibly fresh fish with stunning seaviews.  With the sea crashing on the rocks below at the Kalk Bay restaurant this is about as good as it gets for a memorable fish restaurant.

Or try Kalky’s opposite the Harbour House for the best in fish and chips around!  Queue up for the best crispy hake and chips from this little shack on the edge of the harbour – it will be worth the wait – then devour with fingers or plastic cutlery at a table outside - you can’t beat it! Avoid the queues over lunchtime by going before 12.30 or after 2pm. (Open 10am – 8pm).

The RoundhouseThe Roundhouse – Another exceptionally beautiful fine dining experience, this time on a UNESCO World Heritage site.  Nestled in the glens of Table Mountain, this small 18th century hunting lodge, with its views of Camps Bay far below, is only minutes from the city.  This is an undoubtedly romantic, historical destination with outstanding service.  The outside dining –at The Rumbullion serves a more relaxed tapas-style fare.

Bistro Sixteen82, Constantia - One of the top winery bistros in the Cape, the star of the show here is the tapas served from late afternoon to early evening - but also a brilliant spot for lunch.  With beautiful vineyard views (make sure you get here before sundown to make the most of it), this reasonably-priced bistro with its rustic charm is a favourite for many locals and visitors.
