Saint-Martin makes up the northern (French half) of the north east Caribbean island of St Martin. The other side of the island (St Maarten) is Dutch and it is this combination of 2 countries in one small 36 square mile island that makes it an intriguing holiday destination.

The island of Saint Martin is blessed with 37 beautiful beaches. One of the most popular beaches on the French side of the island is Orient Beach. Frequented by celebrities and jet-setters, this beach is known as the ‘St Tropez of the Caribbean’ and offers fabulous beach restaurants, luxury hotels and of course, a stunning large beach and clear blue sea. For something a little more secluded, Pinel Island, which is situated just off Orient Bay and accessed by a short 10 minute boat ride, is a true hidden gem. Its main beach has white powdery sands and sheltered, shallow clear waters which are protected by the Marine park and offer fabulous snorkelling and shallow water dive opportunities. There are some equally stunning beaches on the Dutch side (St Maarten) including the unbelievable Maho beach where low flying jumbo jets practically skim the top of your head as they come into land just off the shore!

If you can drag yourself away from one of the island’s stunning beaches, other attractions on the French side of St Martin are Pic Paradis, which is the tallest mountain on the island and, nestled into its hillside is Loterie Farm, which is an eco-adventure park with extreme zip wires and private nature reserve.

Temperatures on the island remain a pretty consistent 25 or so degrees Celsius. Peak time to visit Peak time to visit is between December to May when there are fewer risks of hurricanes.

As you would expect from a Gallic island, the cuisine on the French side of St Martin is fabulous. One of the best places to eat is the town of Grand Case on the northern coast of the island where you will find numerous gourmet restaurants that offer a perfect blend of French/Caribbean cuisine.
