Guadeloupe is a French island, situated in the eastern Caribbean Sea. Sometimes nicknamed ‘the butterfly island’ it consists of a series of islands with its two main islands linked together by a mangrove swamp making them look like the wings of a butterfly.

Description

The Grand-Terre is the eastern ‘wing’ and home to white, sandy picture-perfect beaches and locals who have a certain Gallic ‘joie de vivre’ that is impossible not to soak up. Grand-Terre’s main town is the sophisticated Pointe-à-Pitre, which offers some great shopping, museums and coffee and cocoa plantations.

The other main island – or the western ‘wing’ – Basse-Terre is a veritable playground for nature lovers. With La Soufrière volcano in the centre of the island, plus the nearby rain forests of the island’s National Park, there is much to see and discover and plenty of wildlife to spot. The other off-shore islands make great day trips with their pristine beaches and untouched landscapes.

As you would expect from this French territory island, the cuisine is an important part of Guadeloupe’s culture and the restaurant scene here is world class, with some fabulous imported French wines to sup with your meal.
