The magical, religious and deeply historical city of Varanasi in the state of Uttar Pradesh is known as the ‘City of Temples’ and is regarded as sacred by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. One of the oldest living cities in the world, Hindus believe they can bathe away their sins in the Ganges river. There are about 100 Ganga Ghats in Varanasi (which are the steps leading down to the banks of the River Ganges) and it is here that the Hindu people practice their holy rituals including bathing, cremations and yoga. One of the most popular tourist attractions in Varanasi is to take a morning boat ride on the Ganges to see the Ghats, and the daily activities taking place.

Description

Other tourist spots in the city are the Vishwanath Temple, also known as the Golden Temple, the Nepali Hindu Temple and the Alamgir Mosque from which you get a great view of the city and the Panchganga Ghat.

Whilst the number of tourist attractions is perhaps not as dense or magnificent in Varanasi as in other Indian cities, simply wandering through the alleys and soaking up the atmosphere along the river is enough to satisfy the most culture-hungry of tourists. If you are lucky enough to visit Varanasi at festival time, either at Diwali or Shivaratri, you will witness some fabulous preparations, music and decorations.
