Also known as ‘The Pink City’ for its brightly painted stone buildings, Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan and for many holidaymakers, forms one part of the ‘Golden Triangle’ multi-centre tour of India’s 3 most visited cities (Delhi and Agra being the other two). Jaipur is awash with magnificent forts and palaces, once inhabited by the powerful and wealthy Maharajas. The architecture is rich and spectacular and a trip to Jaipur has much to offer visitors.

Description

The Amber (or Amer) Fort which is situated on the top of a hill just outside the city should definitely feature on your ‘must-see’ list of things to do in the Jaipur area, the sound and light show after dark is a particular highlight. The Jaigarh fort is connected to the Amber Fort and was originally built to protect the Fort. It houses the world’s largest cannon on wheels. City Palace is another favourite spot for visitors. Located in the old city walls of Jaipur it has a fabulous museum containing items such as the costumes which belonged to the Maharaja and his harem. Another prominent sightseeing spot is the Hawa Mahal, a beautiful 5 storey palace built in 1799 and famous for its pyramid shape and 953 windows or ‘Jharokhas’ which facilitate free air circulation inside the building.

If you are planning your visit to Jaipur in March, you will be able to catch Jaipur’s annual Elephant Festival which features elephant races, elephant polo matches and elephant tug of war.

To watch the local crafts men at work, visit the Badi Chaupar and Johari old bazaar areas and pick up some local art such as Zardozi embroidery and silver ornament work. Be prepared for some hustle and bustle though!
