For some, a long, golden beach is the perfect place to spend a holiday. For others, it’s a sand-filled nightmare. Perhaps the latter is a little bit of an exaggeration, but it’s true that not everyone loves the beach – in fact, some just don’t like it.

If you’re firmly in the no-sand camp, do not fear, there are plenty of holiday options available for you too. We’ve put together five of the best places to visit for those who just want to steer clear of the beach.

1 . New York City

In a city like this, there’s no time to laze on a beach, even if there are a few around. The Big Apple is absolutely packed full of iconic sights and incredible things to do, from the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty to Central Park and the Met Museum.

Take a stroll through Manhattan’s West Village before heading to Times Square for a dose of neon enlightenment. The city never sleeps, so head out for the night to keep yourself awake. The Meatpacking District is where you’ll find the most exclusive clubs in town, whereas Hell’s Kitchen boasts some of the coolest budget bars in NYC. For live music, check out the Lower East Side for live music and bearded hipsters.

The ultimate city break, a holiday in New York is everything a beach trip isn’t – it’s fast paced, exciting and exhilarating – you’ll love every second of it and if you want to extend your visit see our US multi centre holiday section.

2. Interior Italy

Yes, the Italian coast is blessed with fine beaches, but within its iconic central cities, you won’t find a grain of sand in sight. Our Rome, Tuscany & Florence multi-centre holiday is the perfect example of a stunning trip sans beach.

This is a holiday for food-loving culture vultures who thrive amidst history and beauty, both man-made and natural. Start your trip in the Eternal City of Rome and visit the likes of the Colosseum, the Pantheon, and Saint Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City, before heading off to the rolling hills of Tuscany.

Spend your time here sampling fine Chianti and indulging in Italy’s best feature, its food, until you are fit to burst. End your stay in the beautiful city of Florence and admire the fine art and architecture that it’s known for.

3. India’s Golden Triangle

As cultural experiences go, the Golden Triangle (Delhi, Agra & Jaipur), has to come high up on the list. Start off in the capital Delhi and experience a city like no other. Marvel at the austere beauty of the Red Fort, stare in wonder at the country’s largest mosque (Jama Masjid) and enjoy the old imperial architecture that still lingers from colonial rule.

Next, visit Agra and prepare yourself for a trip to one of the world’s most iconic and visually stunning buildings: The Taj Mahal. Its magnificence is indescribable; you just have to see it for yourself to really appreciate it. After this incredible wonder, experience the Maharaja’s Palace and the Amber Fort in Jaipur.

You’ll find yourself immersed in a fascinating way of life, far removed from anything you’ve experienced before – who needs the beach?

4. Borneo

Although there are beaches along the coast of Borneo, it’s the lush rainforest interior that draws most people to this fascinating island.

The Malaysian section of Borneo is awash was trekking opportunities, indigenous tribes and unique wildlife opportunities that have helped make the island a tourist highlight for many intrepid travellers. Many people opt for Sabah which is home to Mt Kinabalu and Kinabalu National Park, and a plethora of hiking trails. Experience the highest peak in the region before heading to Sepilok, a place famed for its orangutans.

Opt for a multi-centre holiday and combine your trip with Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s diverse capital.

5. Route 66 road trip

Route 66 cuts through the heart of America, taking in some of the country’s most incredible cities and landmarks – and there’s not a grain of sand in sight (well, maybe the odd desert, but that doesn’t count).

Rock out to some blues in Chicago, marvel at the vast open space of the Grand Canyon, roll a Hard Eight in Vegas, or channel your inner Walter White in Albuquerque – basically just do whatever you feel like on a self-drive trip through the USA.

The route takes in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and Illinois so there is an incredible amount of choice when it comes to stops and attractions. Of course, you don’t have to cover the entire 2,448 miles in one go. Be selective and choose a few stops that you know you’ll love. Even if you only drive on it for a few hours, it will certainly liven up your next dinner party conversation. You can easily add on extra stops like Las Vegas.
