Description

The Sakaya Monastery is one of the region’s most popular attractions, it was constructed in 1268 and is one of the largest monasteries. The Samye Monastrey is just as impressive, as it was the birthplace of Tibetan Buddhism, and offers a truly spiritual experience where you can browse through its various sculptures and prayer wheels. Other popular monasteries include Utse and Ganden Kora.

The Potala Palace, is also a must visit attraction. A beautiful complex set into the mountains that is known for its precious sculptures, Budda statues, murals, antiques and religious jewellery that can be found within its walls. If you want to visit the palace then book in advance as numbers are limited.

Tibet is also the home of Mount Everest so there are plenty of opportunities to revel in the views. You can join a group tour or splash out for a private one to explore some of the hiking routes. If you are brave enough you can even climb the mountain which is a life changing experience, but the views from the bottom do not disappoint.

If you are looking to do a spot of shopping try Barkhor Street and pick up some souvenirs. Also head to the beautiful Jokhang temple – the most sacred temple for Tibetan people.
