Jiuzhaigou Valley, or the Nine Villages as it’s more commonly known is a magical mountain valley which was settled in back in the 1300’s by Tibetan pilgrims seeking refuge. They used the towering mountain range to keep them hidden, and it worked for many centuries, only to be discovered in 1972 by a lumberjack passing through.

Description

The region is dotted with 9 traditional Tibetan villages, hence the name, which are one of UNESCO’s national heritage sites. They attract many tourists each year due to their fairy tale setting, with lakes bluer than you could imagine, picture-perfect waterfalls and deep emerald forests, all with a stunning backdrop of snow-capped mountains.

The area is easy to take in by foot, with miles of boardwalk trails and hiking routes. Whilst you are in the area stop and shop for souvenirs at the small markets, take a look at the beautiful Qiang embroidery and try the Tibetan trinkets and Thangka – a traditional form of silk painting.
