✈️ UK – Paihia (2 nights): Fly from your chosen UK airport to Auckland before travelling north to Paihia, your gateway to the beautiful Bay of Islands. With its pristine beaches and hidden coves, this is a tropical paradise where you can take a dolphin-watching cruise, sail to the famous Hole in the Rock, or try sea kayaking. You can also visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds – the historic site where, in 1840, the nation’s most important treaty was signed between the British Crown and Maori chiefs.

🚗 Paihia – Kaitaia (1 night): Spend a night in Kaitaia, the last town before you reach the very top of New Zealand. From here, drive to Cape Reinga via Ninety Mile Beach, where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean in a swirl of currents. Sample wines at New Zealand’s most northerly vineyard or visit the local Maori cultural centre for a glimpse into the region’s traditions.

🚗 Kaitaia – Auckland (2 nights): Continue south to Auckland, the country’s largest city and one of the few in the world with two natural harbours – one on the Tasman Sea and one on the Pacific. Enjoy world-class shopping, harbourside dining and open-air markets, or take in the 360° views from the Sky Tower, the Southern Hemisphere’s tallest building.

🚗 Auckland – Waitomo Caves (1 night): Head to Waitomo to explore its labyrinth of caves, sinkholes and underground rivers. Marvel at the stalactites and stalagmites, and take an unforgettable boat ride illuminated by thousands of glowworms glittering overhead.

🚗 Waitomo Caves – Rotorua (2 nights): Journey to Rotorua, New Zealand’s geothermal wonderland. Bubbling mud pools, exploding geysers and vividly coloured lakes make this one of the country’s most extraordinary destinations. Visit Kuirau Park’s thermal pools, soak in a mud spa, or see the surreal orange and green lakes of Wai-O-Tapu. This is also the best place to visit a Maori village and enjoy a traditional hangi feast.

🚗 Rotorua – Taupo (1 night): Drive to Taupo for a night on the shores of New Zealand’s largest lake. Perfect for watersports and fishing, Lake Taupo also provides easy access to Tongariro National Park, where three active volcanic peaks dominate a stunning alpine landscape of forests and waterfalls.

🚗 Taupo – Wellington (2 nights): Next stop is Wellington, the nation’s capital. Nestled between rugged hills and a sparkling harbour, it’s a city rich in culture, cuisine and creativity. Visit Te Papa Museum, ride the historic cable car, and explore the city’s thriving waterfront. Beyond the city, you can hike coastal trails or sample wines in nearby Wairarapa.

⛴️ Wellington – Kaikoura (1 night): Cross the Cook Strait by Interislander ferry (around 3 hours) and enjoy spectacular views of the Marlborough Sounds. On arrival in the South Island, travel to Kaikoura, famous for its abundant marine life. Take a whale-watching cruise to see resident sperm whales, seals and dolphins, then feast on the town’s legendary crayfish back on shore.

🚗 Kaikoura – Christchurch (2 nights): Drive south to Christchurch, stopping at Hanmer Springs en route to relax in its scenic thermal pools. In Christchurch, wander the Botanic Gardens, ride a vintage tram through the city, or punt along the River Avon. After the earthquakes, Christchurch has reinvented itself with pop-up restaurants, boutique bars and creative street art.

🚗 Christchurch – Dunedin (1 night): Continue to Dunedin, one of the best-preserved Victorian and Edwardian cities in the Southern Hemisphere. Explore the nearby Otago Peninsula – home to albatross, seals and penguins – or stop at Koekohe Beach to see the perfectly spherical Moeraki Boulders.

⛴️ Dunedin – Stewart Island (1 night): Take the one-hour ferry from the mainland to Stewart Island, an untouched natural sanctuary and a paradise for hikers and bird-watchers. With most of the island designated national park, it’s an ideal place to experience pristine wilderness and the spectacular “land of the glowing skies” sunsets.

🚗 Stewart Island – Te Anau (1 night): Return to the South Island via Invercargill – known for its mix of Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco architecture – before continuing to Te Anau, gateway to the magnificent Fiordland National Park. The drive to Milford Sound is one of the most scenic in the world, and a boat cruise through the fiord is simply unforgettable.

🚗 Te Anau – Queenstown (2 nights): Head to Queenstown, the adventure capital of New Zealand. Surrounded by dramatic alpine scenery and set beside Lake Wakatipu, this is the ultimate playground for thrill-seekers, with everything from bungee jumping and jet boating to skydiving and white-water rafting.

🚗 Queenstown – Wanaka (1 night): After the buzz of Queenstown, Wanaka offers tranquillity and mountain views. Nestled on the edge of Lake Wanaka, it’s perfect for fishing, hiking or skiing in winter.

🚗 Wanaka – Franz Josef (1 night): Travel to Franz Josef to see its spectacular glacier, one of the world’s most accessible. A guided walk takes you close to the ice face, while heli-hiking offers a chance to explore ice caves and crevasses from above.

🚗 Franz Josef – Greymouth (1 night): Continue along the West Coast towards Greymouth, stopping in Hokitika to learn about its gold-mining and jade-carving heritage.

🚆 Greymouth – Christchurch (1 night): Your final leg takes you east across the Southern Alps aboard the TranzAlpine Train – one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world – arriving in Christchurch for your final night.

✈️ Christchurch – UK: Spend your last day exploring Christchurch before your flight home to the UK, marking the end of an unforgettable New Zealand adventure.
