The neighbouring islands of Skiathos and Skopelos are the major islands in the lush Sporades which boast some of the most famous soft and sandy beaches in Greece. Skopelos is perhaps the epitome of a Greek Island, in that its’ unspoilt island life with unpretentious food and quiet beaches is a perfect break from hectic everyday life. Skiathos, although equally beautiful, offers more in terms of restaurants, watersports and nightlife, so if you’re looking for great weather, sandy beaches and relaxation then these two islands fit the bill perfectly.

4 Nights – Skiathos
3 Nights – Skopelos

✈ UK – Skiathos (4 Nights): Begin your holiday on the stunning island of Skiathos with its lush green forests and crystal-clear azure waters. Despite being such a popular tourist island, it remains picturesque and generally unspoilt. The island has over 60 beautiful beaches, so there are plenty to choose from whatever you are looking for, from the secluded to the popular family-friendly.

Start by exploring the island’s capital of Skiathos Town which attracts A-list celebrities with its large yacht harbour, gourmet restaurants, boutiques and chic bars. Head for the charming Old Town with its white-washed buildings and narrow cobbled streets and you can enjoy wandering around knowing that eventually all roads will lead you to the harbour. The lively harbour is lined with bars, restaurants and a handful of clubs– this is where to come if you are looking for a good night out! Whilst in the capital, don’t miss the chance to visit Bourtzi, a small peninsula covered in lush vegetation and the romantic ruins of a Venetian fortress.

During your stay on the island you will undoubtedly be looking to enjoy some of its stunning beaches – most of these are concentrated on the south of the island and are strikingly backed by lush green pine forests. The best beach is widely considered to be the beautiful bay of Koukounaries with its golden soft sand, water sports and tavernas. However, due to its’ reputation it is usually busy. The village of Troulos is worth discovering, it too has a popular golden sandy beach, watersports with plenty of tavernas and cafes. Other good beaches include Kanapitsa, Agia Paraskevi and Vromolimnos.

The north of the island is much quieter and even more unspoilt. The town of Evangelistria on the northeastern edge of the island is perched around a monastery in pine-forested hills and well worth a visit. The 18th Century monastery with its flower-filled courtyard and chapel covered in colourful frescos is the place to buy holiday souvenirs with honey, wine and olive oil made by the monks. This small town with just a few traditional Greek tavernas is also the start and end of a lovely walking trail which takes you through the stunning countryside, sleepy villages and past country chapels, it’s a wonderful way to see some more of the north of the island.

â›´ Skiathos – Skopelos (3 Nights):A short one-hour ferry trip takes you to neighbouring island of Skopelos and be camera ready as when Skopelos Town comes into view it is without a doubt one of the most beautiful ports in the country. Along with the archetypal cluster of white-washed buildings creeping up the hillside under terracotta tiles, the town is overlooked by a ruined Venetian fortress and also dotted with the arched towers of several chapels. Take time to explore this traditional town where the old men still sit and gossip over coffee and backgammon and narrow alleyways lead to the restaurants that line the seafront.

Skopelos is the island of monasteries, there are countless scattered over the island and nearly a dozen on Mount Palouki alone. For a wonderful ecclesiastical hike, take a walk and visit some of them, pop in and you’ll be welcomed by their sun-filled courtyards and cool chapels filled with glittering icons. Skopelos is also famously known as the location for the Mamma Mia wedding scene, whether you are a fan of the film or not, the chapel of Agios Ioannis perched up on the northwest of the island is truly spectacular and a must-see!

✈ Skopelos – UK: When your holiday comes to an end, we’ll return you back to Skiathos to catch your flight back to the UK.
