Remember that Macabre opening scene of Spectre?

Well, did you know that Dia de Muertos, or Day of the Dead, actually exists as a national holiday in Mexico?  As featured in the incredible opening scene of the latest Bond film, this extraordinary carnival is when families gather to remember friends and family who have died.  Mainly celebrated in the south of Mexico, and in particular the Oaxaca region where the celebrations take place over 4 days from 30th October to 2nd November, this is a 4,000 year old tradition where death comes alive!

Just like the carnivals of South America, this jubilant parade also attracts visitors from around the world to join in.  With stilt walkers dressed as Spirits, marching bands and locals in elaborate costumes, this is an amazing experience of Mexican life.

Mexico has so much to offer for a holiday – you can easily combine fascinating culture with beautiful beaches and bustling cities.  There are incredible Aztec temples and Mayan ruins, breath-taking rainforests as well as stunning stretches of powder soft white sands. You can swim with dolphins, snorkel in marine parks or just relax on some of central Americas best beaches - and if you go  in October remember to take a deathly mask!
