The Gateway to India is a must-see if you are on holiday in Mumbai. Built during the British Raj in the 1920s, it is a spectacular monument symbolising Mumbai’s modern development and best seen early in the morning when the dawn is breaking. Not far from the Gateway to India, you can take a boat to Elephanta Island where you will find incredible temples carved in to the rock which date back over 1000 years ago. The Haji Ali mosque is a stunning white mosque built in the sea and reached only when the tide is low. Thousands of worshippers visit the mosque to be blessed by the Muslim Saint Haji Ali, which houses his remains.
To soak in the Mumbai atmosphere and sample some of the best market food the city has to offer, head to Chowpatty Beach, where the beachfront comes alive in the evenings. Here you can try all the local culinary favourites at the beachside stalls, or relax with a head massage.
A final tourist highlight has to be a stroll around the city’s vivacious street markets where you’ll find jewels, spices, antiques and haggling!

My wife and I are independant travellers who did not want to be part of a larger tour group although we needed some help with the itinerary - flights, hotels, transfers etc. This is where eShores came in to the picture. I found the entire booking process to be a very positive experience primarily because we were assigned a dediacted travel advisor who remained with us as the sole point of contact throughout the entire process. Kelly was friendly, knowledgeable and responded back to any query promptly. We discussed some initial ideas over the phone and then she e-mailed me various options and we finally selected a trip to Cambodia and South Vietnam. Overall a brilliant service from Kelly and the eShores team (ps We are yet to take the trip but will report back on how the itinerary works out in practical terms when we head out in 2026)
