Wellington, in the southwest of North Island in New Zealand, is the country’s capital city with a buzzing café culture, arts scene and nightlife. Because of its location on the edge of the Cook Strait, between the mountainous regions of the North and South Islands, a strong breeze can often be felt and so it is often known as ‘Windy Wellington’.

Description

For a great view of the city, venture to the top of Mount Victoria – either by foot, bus or car for incredible 360 degree views of the city and harbour. You can also take a cable car up the hill at Wellington Harbour for some more fabulous views.

For a history lesson on New Zealand’s Maori culture and to discover the country’s treasures, visit the Te Papa museum – New Zealand’s national museum situated on Wellington’s waterfront. Another must-visit place in Wellington is the Old Saint Paul’s cathedral – an incredibly beautiful wooden church built in a Gothic Revival style. When you venture inside and view the ornate wood work and stained glass windows you will realise why this place is so special.

Foodies and coffee lovers will adore Wellington – it is said to have more restaurants per capita than New York and it is also New Zealand’s coffee headquarters. On a Sunday, head down to the City Market under the atrium of the Chaffers Dock building on the waterfront to sample some of the city’s best food and drink. You can also join one of the city’s food tours where guides take you round local cafes, restaurants, coffee roasters and food stores to sample some of the finest local specialities.
