Chengdu, located in South West China, is the wealthy capital of the Sichuan province and visitors flock here mainly to get up close and personal with its most famous inhabitants: the Giant Pandas.

Description

The Giant Panda Breeding Research Base is the major attraction in Chengdu and it is here that you can meet the loveable creatures whose numbers are, at the Base, thriving, despite their numbers diminishing dramatically in the wild. Each year approximately 800,000 people visit the centre. The best time of year to visit is spring when the temperature is moderate at about 20 degrees Celsius as pandas don’t like temperatures above 25 degrees when they tend to retreat into caves.

Chengdu isn’t all about pandas (although they are definitely the star attraction). The city in itself has an interesting historic and cultural backdrop and one of the most noteworthy places to visit is the Thatched Cottage of Du Fu, home to Du Fu a famous poet from the Tang Dynasty over a thousand years ago. The grounds include some incredible structures including the Tablet Pavilion and the Shrine of Du Fu.

A visit to Chengdu and the Sichuan region is not complete without visiting one of its many tea houses. Sichuan’s tea drinking culture dates back over 3000 years and Chengdu’s tea houses remain well-loved places for friends, family and business colleagues to meet up for an afternoon of chatting and playing games – a perfect portrait of the laid back pace of life in Chengdu.
