The Best Multi Centre Holiday for Music Lovers!

For a music lover what could be better than a holiday immersed in melody and following in the footsteps of some of music’s Greats?  Head to America’s Deep South and you can experience the unique city of New Orleans where jazz began, kick-back in Memphis, the birthplace of the Blues, and get into the upbeat Country spirit in Nashville.  These soulful cities of the United States are incredibly welcoming and are sure to make an incredible and very memorable US multi centre holiday.

New Orleans

A good place to start is New Orleans, known as the ‘Big Easy’, it’s a melting pot of French, Spanish and Afro-Caribbean influences.  Although so much of this city was destroyed by the terrible Hurricane Katrina, the tourist areas have recovered.  You’ll probably spend most your time in the Old French Quarter which is filled with restaurants, bars, clubs and museums.  Take in the sights and sounds; the unique architecture, smells of Cajun cooking and the happy colourful people.  Wander down Bourbon Street and pick a bar to settle into and enjoy the music, it’s as easy as that.

Jazz floats on the air everywhere you go in this city.  Head to Magazine Street for some shopping and holiday mementos then onto Jackson Square for a laid back afternoon chilling out in a café – you can watch the world go by, be entertained by the street performers and all the while enjoying the view of the beautiful St Louis Cathedral.

Because of its’ colonial history, the city has a strong European feel to it and you won’t need a car to explore New Orleans.  Enjoy plenty of the delicious local food too like the spicy gumbo and fresh seafood and take a trip on a traditional Louisiana paddle streamer down the Mississippi river

When you venture out of the French Quarter you will be rewarded with more wonderful authentic music, particularly downriver, although this is also the area that is also still recovering from the earthquake.  In Downtown do visit the New Orleans Jazz Museum in the Old U.S Mint building and there’s also the Arts District and the Old Warehouse District that are great to wander around.

Leaving Louisiana, head north to Memphis, Tennessee, home of the Blues. Again, you won’t be short of clubs and restaurants to choose from, bar hop along Beale Street enjoying the music and the take-out beer as you go. Memphis, however, doesn’t just sing the blues, it’s also the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll – this is where Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and Elvis all cut their first records!

An obvious ‘must’ is a visit to Graceland – and if you’re an Elvis superfan then take a Platinum tour which, as well as his palatial home, includes The Elvis Auto Museum and The Sincerely Elvis Exhibit.

There’s so much to Memphis though, visit the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum as well as the Stax Museum of American Soul Music.  While you’re in town you could also take a river cruise on the Mississippi if you missed out on it in New Orleans – and also visit the fascinating National Civil Rights Museum.

Back on the road heading north again, you’ll get to Nashville where there’s so much to see, but most importantly you need to head to Second Avenue in Downtown for some serious partying Country-style and maybe even with a bit of line dancing too!

This is the place to explore the clubs and bars, there’s the Honky Tonk strip of Country bars or Midtown’s Music Row for a less touristy equivalent.  There’s The Basement, Mercy Lounge and the legendary Exit/Inn, and what about the famous Coyote Ugly Saloon – but ladies, beware, you may be pulled up on the bar for a dance!  With bar after bar playing live music you can’t help but have a good time in the ‘Music City’.

When you want to eat head to Broadway – there are loads of places to choose from including popular barbecue joints.  In between partying hard there are a few iconic places you must visit – there’s the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Johnny Cash Museum and of course the RCA Studio B where Elvis recorded over 260 songs!

This will be a totally unique holiday that will ensure a brilliant time and loads of memories!
