Which Caribbean Island to Choose?

26/09/2016

Have you always dreamt of an idyllic Caribbean holiday but you don’t know where to begin?  If you don’t want to go on a cruise, and a private yacht is stretching the budget a bit too far, then how on earth do you choose just ONE when all the islands look so incredible?

So, what does your dream holiday involve?  Perfect beaches, some local culture, maybe water sports or jungle trekking – what about picturesque towns with great restaurants?  Is there one place that really fits all your criteria?  Well don’t worry, you don’t need to choose just one.  With a two or even three centre trip you can experience the Caribbean’s most stunning and popular islands in one dream holiday and so benefit from the best of all of them!

Why not start with Antigua.  It is famous for its 365 stunning beaches, so it is pretty much a ‘must’ to include in any Caribbean island hopping holiday.  The island is close to perfection for relaxation too - you can simply wander down to a golden beach, edged by swaying palm trees and lie back and relax by the turquoise sea.

If you can tear yourself away from the beach, then Antigua’s historic sites are worth discovering too.  Nelson’s Dockyard is the only working Georgian dockyard remaining in the world. Its work is rather different nowadays, the atmospheric dockyard with its restored buildings now contains restaurants and bars and moored up in the dock are beautiful yachts.

The islands’ tropical vegetation on the lush, green hills as well as the colourful marine life on the coral reefs are both equally breathtaking and will no doubt tempt you to explore more whether it is on a jeep safari tour or snorkelling in the many coves.

A short flight away is the stunning island of St Lucia with its world-class diving, pristine beaches and colourful Caribbean culture.   Home to the dramatic Pitons, lush rainforests, sulphur springs, waterfalls and picturesque bays, this island really does boast beauty like nowhere else.

The rainforest covered Pitons are a pair of magical mountains on UNESCO’s World Heritage List and one of the Caribbean’s most impressive attractions.  For the adventurous, rainforest treks are a great way to make the most of this island.  And for those who love a bit more activity after dark, ‘Jump Up’ parties are the Caribbean way to party the night away.  There are also tours of the cocoa plantations and the delicious Creole cuisine for foodies to enjoy too.

Another short flight away is the ever popular island of Barbados.  Famous for its trendy restaurants and bars, there is also plenty to do including golf, water sports, sightseeing and shopping.  But again you can be as laid back or fun filled as you want.

You can enjoy water sports on palm-fringed Dover Beach, by lively St Lawrence Gap or explore the rugged East Coast from Bathsheba, a surfer’s paradise.

No other Caribbean island can match Barbados for the choice and quality of places to eat out. Not only does the island offer lots of excellent, upmarket restaurants, but it also has plenty of places where you can eat good, down-to-earth, local Bajan cuisine too.  The island’s most famous restaurant, Cliff is where you can dine under the stars overlooking an idyllic cove or you could take afternoon tea at the renowned Sandy Lane Hotel.

Why not sample the islands famous rum and learn about the island’s sugar cane history at the Mount Gay Rum Factory or even take a thrilling island jeep safari through forests and fields of sugarcane?   Bridgetown is well worth exploring to see the monuments and the Garrison Savannah military base – also visit Oistins Fish Fry, an open-air party, for BBQ fish, calypso music and Bajan cuisine.  And don’t forget cricket! Visit the legendary Sir Garfield Sobers Stadium and watch The Windies cricket team play at The Kensington Oval.
