Selfies have become the phenomenon of recent years and it is almost impossible to avoid them on social media. With this in mind, you might as well join the crowd, but everyone wants to get a better selfie than the one that was posted before. Here are some suggestions for selfie locations that will make your Facebook friends green with envy.

In front of the Burj Khalifa, Dubai

Taking selfies in front of buildings is fairly commonplace, with the Eiffel Tower, Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Sagrada Familiar all popular choices. Take your selfie to the max, however, by being photographed in front of the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The 30-acre lake in front gives you enough space to get yourself and the entire building into the frame.

Phra Nang Beach, Thailand

If selfies are designed to make people jealous, then snapping a shot on an idyllic beach is a must. Phra Nang in Thailand is the perfect setting for such a selfie, as not only does it have the prerequisite white sand and turquoise sea, but there is a picturesque outcrop of land to add into the frame. Even better, traditional Thai boats can sometimes be seen bobbing in the surf, giving the impression the subject of the photo has just stepped into holiday brochure.

Staples Center, USA

Imagine a selfie that takes in all the excitement of seeing one of America's most iconic sports teams during a game. This is what you get if you get a picture of yourself at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Seeing the iconic yellow and purple jerseys of the likes of Kobe Bryant will certainly make for an impressive selfie. See our USA multi centre holiday to find out more.

Many London landmarks have featured in selfies, but head to the Scottish capital to get something a little more original. With the fortification being located on a hill, there are plenty of spots to choose from to get it in behind you. Princes Street is a good option, but spend your time exploring Edinburgh to get that unique perspective.

Iguazu Falls

Famously described as taller than Niagara and wider than Victoria Falls, Iguazu on the borders between Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay sees an intense amount of water descend over its drops. It can take a whole day to walk around just the Argentinean side of the falls, with plenty of jaw-dropping selfie spots to be found along the way. Many people opt for Devil's Throat, where several descents come together, but you can take your pick.

I Love KL sign, Malaysia

One of the main features of a good selfie is putting across the essence of a location or feeling to the viewer of the photo. Nowhere can this be better expressed than outside the Kuala Lumpur City Gallery, where a huge I Love KL sign has been erected. Be sure to seek it out on your trip to Malaysia.

Selfies should either have a great backdrop or include some interesting friends, so tick the box with the latter and pose with a koala. Nobody will be able to resist these furry faces in your selfies and visiting helps the staff at the Lone Pine Koala Park in Brisbane to look after these adorable creatures.

Top of the Rock, USA

It could be tempting to add the Empire State Building to the list of great selfie locations, but if you are standing on the 86th floor of the iconic construction it's very difficult to see it. There isn't enough space on New York's skyscraper crowded streets to get far enough away from it for a good selfie.

That is why the observation deck on the 70th storey of 30 Rockefeller Plaza is perfect, as you have views of the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building and Central Park spread out in front of you.

Jokulsarlon Lagoon, Iceland

If a Facebook friend has added selfies from the Blue Lagoon in Iceland, go a step further and supercharge your shots with icebergs. These can be found at the Jokulsarlon Lagoon on the edge of the Vatnajokull National Park. Every size and shape of iceberg imaginable drifts past and the shades of blue in these natural formations will have your tagging your selfies #nofilter.

Santa Clara, Cuba

There is debatably nobody more iconic than Che Guevara and murals of the revolutionary have been daubed all over the walls of Santa Clara, his final resting place. Take a selfie next to one of these portraits or pose with the statue that stands above his mausoleum in the town. His image is instantly recognisable and a real part of visiting Cuba.
