Location: Based at Nungwi, on the north west coastline of Zanzibar and about an hour’s drive from the island’s capital, Stonetown, La Gemma Dell‘Est Beach Hotel is surrounded by tropical gardens and waterfalls.
Description: With views over the Indian Ocean, this large hotel has much to offer.
In addition to safaris, visits can also be arranged to Jozani Tropical Forest. The nearby marine and diving centres ensure guests have plenty to do, offering activities including windsurfing and canoeing. Closer to home, the resort has a large swimming pool with children’s area, Jacuzzi and outdoor gym. Live entertainment is provided in the Sunset Lounge & Bar.
When it comes to refreshments, La Gemma Dell‘Est has a plentiful supply of eateries and bars, including an al fresco pizzeria on the beach, an oriental café, a beach bar and an a la carte restaurant. Special theme nights are organised weekly.
Accommodation: There are 138 rooms to choose from, ranging from deluxe rooms and suites to private villas. All have a private terrace and ocean view, ensuite marble bathroom, king sized or twin beds, satellite TV and minibar. Each room has patio doors which open out onto the landscaped gardens and executive villas even have the added benefit of a private butler service!
Our Opinion: La Gemma Dell’Est is a plush hotel, ideal for couples or families either keen to develop their skill in watersports or experience the safaris and excursions. Whilst not the most ideal resort for honeymooners or those in search of romance, it does however, cater particularly well for children over the age of 12, who can take part in most of the activities available.
