Location: The Selous Game Reserve is situated only 200km west of Dar Es Salaam and takes up almost 5% of Tanzania’s land. It is less well known than the Serengeti, although it is four times larger.
Description: The vastness of the Selous Game Reserve and the mighty Rufiji River which runs through it, means the location is ideal for spotting crocodile, hippo, elephants and wild dogs.
Safaris and exploration can be organised in vehicles, boats or on foot, accompanied by experienced guides.
The resort itself, split into two camps, is situated in a palm forest on the edge of Lake Nzerakera; the six or seven luxury tents within each camp being raised on platforms, with verandah either side. There are no boundaries and wildlife is permitted to (and frequently does by all accounts) wander through the site.
There is also a dining room, bar and private swimming pool for each camp.
Accommodation: All tents have ceiling fans, ensuite bathroom facilities and open air private showers.
Our Opinion: If the possibility of an elephant or hippo brushing past your bathroom fills you with excitement, then Selous certainly is the place for you! Rarely are humans permitted to live in such close proximity to the animals and Selous Safari Camp is one of only a few to offer this chance of a lifetime.
