Location: The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is situated around 180km west of Arusha, on the eastern edge of the Serengeti in northern Tanzania.
Description: The conservation area itself is spread over 3000 miles and contains many species of wildlife including lion, rhino and elephants. The lodge itself is of spectacular design, based on the traditional Maasai mud and stick manyatta.
Activities are provided by way of walking or driving safaris and cultural visits to Maasai villages, where guests can see their way of life, their traditions and dancing; archaeological excursions and trips to the “Shifting Sands” volcanic ash dune.
Dining can take place either indoors or out, taking in the very different splendour of both surroundings. Cuisine is pan-African.
Accommodation: There are three individual camps, all with extremely glamorous interiors. The 30 suites are raised on stilts and are made of stone and thatch.
All of the suites have ensuite bathroom with chandelier, bathtub and shower. Persian rugs, velvet bedspread and antiques adorn the rooms – not exactly reminiscent of the African lifestyle but undoubtedly opulent and unashamedly luxurious.
Our Opinion: There are few lodges in Africa that offer this much comfort, style and glitz. More reminiscent of an Hollywood film set, it is nevertheless elegant and a great way to pamper yourself after a hard day’s safari.
