Location: Jongomero Camp is off the beaten track. So much so that it is unknown to many tourists, allowing it to remain undisturbed and unspoilt. Based in the Ruaha National Park in the south west of Tanzania, the camp is accessible by air, with the airstrip just ten minutes away and the flight to Dar es Salaam taking two hours.
Description: Jongomero is a tented resort, in what could be called “the true Africa”. It comes as no surprise to learn that there are few entertainment facilities of the noisy variety – nature makes its own entertainment at Jongomero. It does, however, have a swimming pool and offers game walks, drives and safaris with trained rangers.
It’s real outdoor living here. There are no bars and no restaurants. Dining takes place in a designated area under a shady tree next to the Jongomero River. What isn’t basic, however, is the delicious international cuisine.
Accommodation: There are eight tents on raised platforms under a thatched roof. However, luxury is provided in the form of eight foot wide beds, ensuite bathrooms with hot and cold running water and private verandahs.
Our Opinion: Although there are few facilities, Jongomero really does help you experience Africa at its finest. Becoming one with nature, there is nothing to distract you from enjoying the tranquillity that can still be found here, if you look hard enough. Jongomero is absolutely unique – but don’t tell anyone!
