The South Africa Experience:
If you’re planning a trip to South Africa there are just so many possibilities, as it has more to offer than any other country. From the diverse cities and towns, the wide range of wildlife to the variety of sports and activities on offer and with you in control of your itinerary, anything is possible.
The highlight of any trip to South Africa has to be Cape Town in the Western Cape. The vistas are breathtaking, from Table Mountain to the marina, and from the beaches across the cityscape. From the bustling markets of the city bowl, the stylish bars and boutiques of the V&A Marina and the various suburbs offering chilled delis where you can spend afternoons drinking wine and enjoying superb food. For beachside relaxation head to Camps Bay, Cape Towns trendy beach resort offering a pristine white beach with swaying palms trees and some of the trendiest restaurants in town.
Exploring the Cape Peninsula is a must - watch whales from the coast, go shark diving or even visit the penguins on Boulders Beach. If sports activities are more your thing, there’s everything from watersports and surfing to abseiling and paragliding. Alternatively you could simply choose to spend endless day relaxing on the stunning beaches. The Winelands are also worth a visit and if you haven’t got time for a night or two there take a day trip from Cape Town to do a little wine tasting and explore the beautiful town of Stellenbosch.
Next we’d recommend heading up the Garden Route - one of the Worlds most famous drives; taking in the amazing views and the enchanting places along the way. Mossel Bay is surprisingly large, with a wide selection of shops, bars and restaurants. There’s a great golf course, large casino and you can hike numerous coastal trails. George which is actually a very small city is quite industrial on the outskirts but when you get right in to the centre there are some interesting old buildings. Oudtshoorn offers the famous Cango caves and Cango Wildlife ranch. Wilderness offers a never-ending expanse of rivers, lakes and beaches and is an ideal place to relax. Knysna the famous oyster town is a compact town, with excellent seafood restaurants, a waterfront harbour providing various boutiques and bars and for the more adventurous, the lush forests, lagoons and rivers offer a wealth of activities. Plettenberg is a beautiful coastal town where you can play golf, hike, canoe, fish, water ski, paraglide and horseback ride to name but a few, it also has the most striking beach. Birds of Eden, Monkeyland and Plettenberg Game Reserve are close by where you can see a wide variety of South Africa's indigenous wildlife. Tsitsikamma National park offers a range of adventure sports such as zip wiring down waterfalls, canopy tours, and the Worlds tallest bungee jump - Tenikwa Wildcat Sanctuary is also a must! Port Elizabeth known as 'The friendly city' is the last city along the route and just oozes relaxed hospitality. Whether you're browsing in shops, having a coffee, or walking along the beach you will feel the relaxed vibe.
The Garden Route finishes in the Eastern Cape. This region offers some of South Africa’s best beaches, including the world famous Jeffreys Bay beach as well as excellent game reserves such as Shamwari. The Eastern Cape is situated between the Western Cape and KwaZulu Natal, and is bordered by the Orange River and Drakensberg Mountains.
After the Eastern Cape you will come to KwaZulu Natal which is a world in one province and a mix of African, European and Indian cultures. Durban is the province’s hub and buzzes with all the energy of a major port city. With numerous luxury hotels along the beachfront, this is South Africa’s Miami Beach. To the North of Durban you will find some of South Africa’s best game reserves. To the West lie the majestic Drakensberg Mountains, an adventure tourist's playground and there are the famous battlefields to visit. The province also boasts two World Heritage Sites, the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park and the Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg Park.
Next travel on to Mpumalanga province; one of South Africa's top tourist destinations. Known as "Paradise Country", few regions in the world can match the extraordinary beauty. It covers nearly 80 000 km² from rolling highlands to the lofty escarpment and the lush wetlands. It also boasts some of the countries most well known game reserves such as Kruger National Park, you can visit the Echo Caves, as well as God’s Window.
Next you'll come to Gauteng and a quick visit to Pretoria is highly recommended. It’s known as the Jacaranda City for all the purple blossom bedecked trees. Pretoria is a lovely, quiet city where you will find significant old buildings and fascinating museums. Next you can head to Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa. Johannesburg is the wealthiest and, without doubt, the economic powerhouse of Africa and is well worth exploring however from here you can connect to anywhere in the World. So from here, whether you want to fly home or on to somewhere else in the World the choice is yours. How about finishing you trip on one of the stunning beaches in Mauritius or Zanzibar.
