The famed mount lavinia lies on the west coast of Sri Lanka on an exclusive beach. The hotel itself dates back to the colonial times and is the former house of Sir Thomas Maitland the Governor General of Sri Lanka. Legend has it that the name mount lavinia is dervied from the story of Maitland and his mistress Lovina who was a local dancer. Their love was kept a secret for fear of repercussions and many say that Sir Thomas and his mistress met in secret by a tunnel leading from his wine cellar to Lovinas well. The lovers eventually parted when Sir Thomas was moved to Malta where he died a bachelor. The secret tunnel was sealed in the 1920's and Lovina's (later named Lady Lavinia) statue now sits in a fountain on the front of the hotel.
