Location: Guludo is situated between northern Quirimbas National Park, Mozambique and the Indian Ocean, close to Pemba. Flights to Pemba are available from both Johannesburg and Dar Es Salaam and from there, transport to Guludo is either by aeroplane, helicopter or 4x4.
Description: Guludo Beach Lodge is described as “eco-friendly”. Established in 2002 by an English couple, it is principally an economic project, designed to give a return to poverty-stricken locals and protect the environment, donating 5% of its overall income to the related Nema Foundation.
There are a wide range of activities available, from diving to whale watching, archery to football and island hopping to sunset sailing. Children are particularly welcome and catered for. Locals welcome the opportunity to show guests around their village and there is a football match every afternoon between Guludo staff and guests and the villagers.
Being so close to the African bush, safaris are of course popular, with the opportunity to see elephants, antelopes, monkeys and sometimes even big the big cats.
Guludo’s restaurant serves fish and seafood straight from the ocean and produce grown locally, all helping to sustain the local economy.
Accommodation: Four types of lodge are available: Adobe Bandas come with verandah, hammock and raised king sized bed; Tented Bandas, opening straight onto the beach boast an “alfresco bathroom”, jokingly referred to as “loo with a view”, Family Bandas are designed to give children their own living space whilst still remaining close and safe and the Zala Suite is pitched at honeymooners or couples looking for a romantic holiday, having its own private courtyard and open air bed.
