History
The Mayans were the first civilization dating back to 1000BC, an advanced society with expert hunters and farmers; they built strong monuments and built a large empire but mysteriously dispersed in 800AD. They were proceeded by the Aztecs, who set up base where Mexico City is now and made it officially their capital in 1325. The Aztecs as well as being expert farmers, hunters and impressive builders, developed an advanced social and political system. In 1521 Hernan Cortes from Spain arrived in Mexico taking over the Aztec settlement and beginning Spain’s mission to take over central Mexico. The Spanish held control until 1810 when Miquel Hidalgo and a group of rebels won back Mexico’s independence. Mexico’s ancient civilizations created societies and archaeological wonders that are still celebrated today and is one of the reasons why this is such a popular tourist destination.
