Dubai’s origins go back into the distant past with a rich collection of objects discovered at nearby Al-Qusais dating back to the first millennium BC, however until the 1800’s it was just a very small fishing village inhabited by members of the Bani Yas tribe. In the Early 19th Century 800 members of a branch of the Bani Yas tribe from the Liwa oasis moved and settled in Dubai growing the village significantly. The Bani Yas had liberal attitudes, attracting Indian and Persian traders, turning Dubai in to a bustling port, the busiest in the region and trade got an additional boost in 1902 when Lingah introduced high customs dues. By the 1930s, nearly a quarter of the population was foreign, with the British establishing a political agency there in 1954. In the 1960s Bedouin nomads that used to roam the dunes of the surrounding desert began to settle in villages and in 1966 the discovery of oil entirely transformed Dubai. The late HH Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum and his successor, current ruler, HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ensured oil revenues were used to develop economic and social infrastructure which laid the foundations for today's modern society. The independent emirate joined Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah in 1971 to form the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with Ras Al Khaimah joining in 1972. Dubai is situated on the Persian Gulf, located midway between the Far East and Europe and is approximately 2,428 square miles in size. |
